When Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists advises that children should have their initial orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This early visit allows Dr. Robert Yu to assess the need for orthodontic treatment and determine the optimal timing for any necessary interventions. While age 7 is a general guideline, some dentists in our community, trained to identify orthodontic issues early, may recommend an evaluation sooner.
Why Evaluate Children Early?
Early orthodontic evaluations provide several benefits, including:
- Guiding the eruption of teeth into better positions.
- Preserving space for incoming permanent teeth.
- Reducing the risk of damage to protruded front teeth.
If early treatment is necessary, Dr. Yu can address various factors such as:
- Guiding jaw growth and permanent teeth development.
- Regulating the width of the dental arches.
- Gaining space for permanent teeth.
- Preventing the need for extractions.
- Correcting habits like thumb-sucking.
- Addressing abnormal swallowing or speech issues.
Essentially, early intervention can simplify and potentially minimize future orthodontic treatments.
Does Early Treatment Benefit All Children?
Early orthodontic treatment isn’t universally beneficial. Some orthodontic issues are more efficiently treated during the teenage years when all permanent teeth are present.
Additionally, certain skeletal problems should be addressed only when growth is more advanced. Dr. Yu will develop a personalized treatment plan based on each child’s unique needs. If early treatment isn’t warranted, your child will be placed in our orthodontic observation program.
What is the Orthodontic Observation Program?
The orthodontic observation program is designed for patients not yet ready for treatment. This program allows us to monitor the growth and eruption of permanent teeth. Early removal of baby teeth, if needed, can sometimes improve the eruption pattern and reduce future treatment time. We will notify your general dentist of any recommendations made during your visit. Patients in this program are seen every 6-8 months to track their progress. This program is free of charge and helps determine the ideal timing for starting orthodontic treatment, ensuring the best outcomes.
Additional Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
Beyond achieving a beautiful smile, braces offer several functional benefits:
- Enhances bite and teeth function.
- Improves oral hygiene.
- Prevents excessive wear on teeth.
- Increases the longevity of natural teeth.
Will Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces in Adolescence?
While early treatment can address significant issues and prevent more severe problems, it may not eliminate the need for braces during adolescence. Often, a subsequent phase of treatment (Phase II) is needed to complete alignment once all permanent teeth have erupted. In some cases, further orthodontic treatment may not be necessary.
Should We Continue Seeing Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes, maintaining regular dental check-ups and cleanings with your family dentist is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Braces and other appliances require diligent oral care to prevent dental issues. We recommend visiting your family dentist every 6 months to ensure optimal dental health throughout your orthodontic journey.
