Orthodontic emergencies can occur occasionally, especially if an injury to the mouth happens during treatment. Dental emergencies with braces or other orthodontic appliances typically fall into two categories: issues related to orthodontic appliances and direct injuries to the mouth and teeth.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Orthodontic appliances can sometimes break or become bent. If you experience issues such as loose bands, brackets, or broken wires, contact our office during patient hours for an appointment. Please note that we cannot address emergencies on a walk-in basis. Here are some tips for managing common problems until you can visit us:
- Irritating Tie Wire: Cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
- Loose Band or Bracket: Generally, these can remain in place until you see us. Call our office during patient hours to schedule a repair.
- Broken or Poking Archwire: Use a pencil eraser to bend it into place or trim it with nail clippers. If the issue persists, call us during office hours for further assistance.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
For direct injuries to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are undergoing orthodontic care, follow these steps:
- Apply Ice: Immediately ice the injured area to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Contact Your Dentist: Reach out to your regular dentist as soon as possible. An x-ray may be needed to assess the extent of the injury.
If a tooth has been knocked out, displaced, or fractured, your family dentist is the best first contact, as they can provide the necessary treatment. If your orthodontic appliances are affected, we will arrange to replace or adjust them once you have seen your general dentist, depending on your comfort level.
After Office Hours
Please contact our office if you experience pain or an orthodontic emergency outside of regular office hours. We provide information on who to reach out to for further assistance.
